Dogs have long been considered man’s best friend, but their impact goes far beyond companionship. In recent years, emotional support and therapy dogs have become a recognized and often vital part of mental health care. But do they really help? Emotional Support Dogs (ESDs) are animals prescribed by a licensed mental health professional to provide comfort and support to individuals struggling with emotional or psychological conditions. These dogs don’t require special training beyond basic behavior control, but they play a huge role in reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression, PTSD, and more.
Therapy Dogs, on the other hand, are trained to provide affection and comfort to people in hospitals, nursing homes, schools, and disaster areas. Unlike ESDs, therapy dogs are not designated for one individual—they serve many people and work alongside handlers in structured programs.
