Mats happen — especially in long-haired or curly-coated breeds. Whether it’s behind the ears, under the collar, or around the legs, tangled fur can quickly turn into painful mats that pull at your dog’s skin and even cause infections if left alone. But don’t worry — with the right tools and patience, you can get those mats out gently.
Start by gently working through the mat with your fingers if it’s small. Then use a slicker brush or detangling comb, holding the base of the mat near the skin to avoid pulling. For tougher mats, a detangling spray or conditioner can help loosen things up. Always work in small sections and be patient — it’s better to take breaks than rush and hurt your dog.
If mats are too tight or widespread, it’s best to visit a professional groomer. Never try cutting mats out with scissors — it’s easy to accidentally cut the skin. To prevent mats in the future, brush your dog regularly, especially after walks or baths, and check high-friction areas like the armpits, behind the ears, and under harnesses.
Keeping your dog’s coat tangle-free doesn’t just make them look good — it keeps them comfortable and healthy too.
