Increased water intake in dogs can be normal in some cases, but excessive drinking (polydipsia) may signal an underlying health issue. If you notice your dog drinking more than usual, here are some possible reasons:
Dogs naturally drink more water when it's hot outside or after exercise to stay hydrated.
Dry kibble diets require more water intake compared to wet food. High-sodium foods or treats can also increase thirst.
Excessive thirst can be a sign of various health problems, including:\n- Diabetes Mellitus – High blood sugar levels cause increased thirst and urination.
Certain medications, like steroids or diuretics, can increase thirst as a side effect.
If your dog’s excessive thirst is accompanied by weight loss, lethargy, vomiting, or frequent urination, consult your veterinarian promptly. Keeping track of water intake can help your vet diagnose any underlying issues.
